Enjoy & Discover
Rotterdam City Life
The Connection has an unrivaled
location in the heart of the Rotterdam Centre. Next to your doorstep, you find
many bars and
restaurants, the library, market hall, and sports facilities.
Rotterdam is a young, dynamic
global city, continuously renewing itself at a rapid rate. Sparkling
skyscrapers, an impressive port, trendy restaurants, and food markets, renowned
museums, and awesome festivals are the direct result of the can-do mentality of
the Rotterdam inhabitants. Add to that the many extraordinary attractions and
city tours – by bike, bus, boat, or on foot – and you understand why Rotterdam
was voted Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016.
Innovative
Full of energy and innovation, the city
reinvented itself after the bombing of the Second World War. It broke with the
past and chose modern architecture. The motto: light, air, and space, was
groundbreaking for that time. The local people still embrace experimentation:
almost anything is possible. Here, you are constantly surprised by new
initiatives: from a rooftop city farm to a music festival in the harbor, from
an exclusive rooftop bar to a brewery in an old warehouse. For expats that are
looking for expat housing are also great opportunities.
City of architecture
If you love architecture then
a visit to Rotterdam – with its patchwork of architectural styles – is a must.
Icons of ‘the new build’ era stand beside the typical
reconstruction-architecture from the sixties, seventies, and eighties. They
clash cheerfully with the hypermodern landmarks that have been built in recent
decennia: the Erasmusbrug, Rotterdam
Central Station, De Rotterdam,
the Timmerhuis and
of course the Markthal.
The Markthal
You’ll find an indoor market hall in various
world-class cities, but the combination with luxury housing makes Rotterdam’s
Markthal the first of its kind. The apartments are draped over the food market
in a horseshoe configuration. The Markthal has about 100 fresh food stands,
nearly 15 food shops, and various restaurants, with a supermarket and a
four-level underground car park below. As you wander amongst the market stands,
look up to enjoy the massive artwork sprawling across the ceiling: the ‘Horn of
Plenty’ by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. Thanks to this grand span of art, the
Markthal has been referred to as the Dutch version of the Sistine Chapel.
Drinks
& Dining
Rotterdam’s wonderful food culture stems from
the enormous cultural diversity in the city. You can see that and you can smell
it when you walk at the Meent with all its shops and eateries, at the outdoor
markets in front of the Markthal on the Binnenrotte, where fresh herring is
advertised in many languages. Choosing a restaurant from
the huge selection can be challenging like ‘Loetje’ on the Binnenrotte 192,
where you can enjoy the best meat in town. It is situated under “the
connection Rotterdam” this is an old PTT telecommunication building what was
very important in the early years before and after the war, what is made a huge
transformation in 2019 the made 20 apartments in it what is now popular under a
lot of expats, who like to rent an apartment in Rotterdam. Whatever you love
and whatever your budget is, one thing is certain: Rotterdam will leave you
wanting more.
Port city
As a port city, it
has unbreakable ties to the water, from the Maas River that flows right through
the city to the many (historic) city harbors like Delfshaven. The city flows –
courtesy of the Maas – seamlessly over into its industrial port that stretches
for 40 kilometers to the Maasvlakte 2 and Hoek van Holland.
The City is known for its
spectacular port but is also one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands with
parks like the Kralingse Bos,
the Vroesenpark and The Park at
the Euromast.
